Runtastic Moment Elite review

If you want the perks of a fitness tracker without having to sacrifice the traditional analog watchface and classic watch look, you might be a little stretched to find something appealing.

But the new Moment range of fitness tracker watches from app-maker Runtastic not only have that classic analog look, but also manage to give you step, sleep and calorie-burning info… with quite a few unique additional perks.

First off, the Runtastic Moment Elite is waterproof to 100 metres, so there’s no need to worry about getting it wet. Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about recharging it: the device has a CR2430 watch-battery that only has to be changed every six months.

A large part of the reason the Moment Elite is able to track what it can using as little power as it does is thanks to Bluetooth Smart — though the other part of that power-saving equation comes down to the fact that the sensors on the Moment really are quite basic.

Using the free Runtastic app, you’ll get your daily steps, active minutes, calories burned, distance and the time you were asleep, but all this info is derived from just the step-counter sensor and a timer.

Though the watch doesn’t have the sensors to track your exercise route via GPS (like some more full-featured wearables) and the sleep tracking is rather rudimentary, the Runtastic Me app does an adequate job of tracking your daily activity — though, it does regularly try to coax you into upgrading to a $12.99 a month premium membership. (Which largely nets you some non-essential ‘motivational’ elements.)

If you’re just wanting to dip your toes into the wearables pond, but would rather a traditional looking watch, then it’s hard to go past the Runtastic Moment Elite, but for those looking for more in depth activity metrics, it isn’t ideal. [Joel Burgess]
