Review: Netgear ReadyNAS Ultra 4

The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 is a 4 bay network attached storage device designed for high end home users. This model combines some of Netgear’s nice business NAS features along with features home users need to deal with their ever growing stacks of digital content.

The ReadyNAS Ultra 4 can accept up to 8TB of hard drive storage with volumes managed by the X-RAID2 system. X-RAID2 means a seamless expansion of storage volumes when adding new drives so you won’t need to split out to new shares or reformat to get contiguous space just plug in and go.

The unit also runs as a DLNA certified home media server capable of serving digital video and music to compatible devices without extensive setup and configuration. If you’ve already got a lot of data and can see it growing even bigger this is a good option up to 8TB. Beyond that you’re on your own.

Available from Netgear retailing for $635 (diskless).
